ESCAPADE-a time to catch-up with friends officially started on Sunday, Dec 6, 2009. Escapade-as the name suggests, an outing to chill out and participate in meaningful activities together, taking time off from our busy schedule to meet up face to face.

It has been an idea on my mind for the longest time and as Darryl suggested we should hang out sometime soon, I very well knew this is the moment to get started with that possible thought. It was an enjoyable night and definitely a dream come true for me personally as seven of us, Sly, Justin, Darryl, Michaela, Tobias, Stephen and I had a fantastic dinner at AMICI, an Italian Restaurant located at Holland Village.

I really appreciate each and everyone present that night for taking time off your busy schedules to catch up with one another over dinner. No matter how busy we are, we should never forget or give up meeting face to face. At the end of the day, ESCAPADE is just an event/activity to get us together but our friendship(s) go beyond activities and events. Friendship starts by loving and caring for someone intentionally and progresses day by day.

This year, has been a journey of learning about my friendship with others and bringing it to a whole new level. I’m really thankful for every single opportunity to be with my friends. That night, I saw generosity expressed by many. It was just so refreshing sitting in the company of my own circle of friends. Sly, who has been a great support and encouragement to me, exclaimed “the night was good but great times are ahead!”

We need friends to survive, let’s build meaningful friendships!

Why W.A.P?

W.A.P – Write and Pray is a channel to express our love and care through prayer, which is the prelude of God's mercy and blessings. While God’s character never changes, the way He works CAN change (Exodus 32:13-15, Psalm 90:12-14, Jeremiah 18:7-9, Jonah 4:1-3). Understanding the value of prayer, we commit ourselves to pray earnestly, expecting God for a breakthrough.

My Uncle and Aunt just came back from a short vacation at Manila. They got us some custard candies,Yema. It tastes like an Indian delicacy, Palgova(Milk Sweet). If you want to make some for yourself and friends, check out the recipe below.

Ingredients:

2 cans of condensed milk
3 egg yolks
1 tablespoon of melted butter
3 tablespoons of chopped langka (jack fruit)
3 tablespoons of chopped nuts

Procedure:

In a bowl cream the egg yolk and condensed milk. Then pour in a casserole and cook slowly over medium fire. You should continue mixing it to avoid sticking. Cook it until it thickens. Add your chopped nuts and jackfruit. Let it cool and form the shape you want.

2 cans of condensed milk
plastic cellophane for wrapping

Directions:

You will have to use a regular frying pan to get the best result, not the non-stick one.
Pour the condensed milk in pan and put on medium heat.
Using a metal spatula, stir the milk as if you are scraping the bottom of the pan.
This must be done continuously to avoid burning the milk and to prevent it from sticking at the bottom of the pan. This will also ensure that it is cooked evenly.
You can tell that the yema is done if your condensed milk sticky.
Let it cool and wrap in cellophane cut outs for easy serving.

We had a mouth-watering lunch at Banana Leaf Apollo at Little India with family. You guys should try Lassi - a yogurt-based drink which is made by blending yoghurt with water, salt, pepper, ice and Indian spices. These are the Lassi variations: Traditional mild-salted, sweet and mango. It was refreshing to drink during lunch, especially under such hot weather.

Why do we dream of doing great things and yet dread doing the hard work? Why do we want to remain at the comfortable audience seat where what we can learn is just so much? Spectators see things from afar, participants experience it first-hand. If you really want to achieve big things, you've got to expose yourself to bigger things.

As a spectator you see what's on stage. You get inspired.

As a participant you know the overview of the production. You inspire others!

Depending on the guests-list and budget one would decide how one would love to celebrate his/her birthday. Thinking of it may sometimes be a hassle, hunting for the location, choosing the right theme, sending out invitation cards and so on. The satisfaction comes after party is over; and you know that you’ve given your best and celebrated the most precious moments in life with your loved ones and friends.

Surprise!
How great it is to have such awesome friend/family members to plan for surprises try their best to not leak out the secret and put the SURPRISE plan into action at the right moment. This makes it really a surprise if it’s not too ‘planned’ til the person knows what’s going on. It will then defeat the purpose of a surprise.

Yesterday, while on Facebook, I came across this video that my friend Desmond recorded. After hitting the play button, I realised that it was something he had written and composed. The lyrics of the song ‘Our Hearts Never Depart’ somehow touched my heart. The most important thing to do while watching the video is to pay attention to the lyrics. It’s Desmond’s first attempt and I believe after much practice he’ll be able to bring out the best. The most important thing is to sing out your heart and I admire that.

Numerous comments flooded his Facebook and many agreed that the song brought back many memories of their individual friendship journey. I believe that there is power in friendships. We are created to be relational and not alone. Friends do play an important part in our lives. This song somehow accompanies my desire for building strong friendships with people around me. Music melts the heart and lyrics add meaning to the song. As I reflected about my friends while listening to the song, it just added much meaning to this very special thing called ‘Friendship’.

Now, how I wished that I wrote and composed this song. As I sit here in my room on a rainy day, I want to thank all my friends for being part of my life. I may have thanked you many times but it’s never enough to just say thank you. Friendship starts with the heart, from the day we met til the end we run together and stand by each other through thick and thin. When everyone else run away from me, I know that my friends will be there for me. I may have made wrong choices and done many things that I should not have done but it is people like you who chose to love and accept me for who I am.

It’s because of your relentless encouragement and support that I’ve been running my race with confidence. I just want to say... I never had a friend like YOU! I hope that I could sing this song for you one day… but for now I dedicate this song for the years of friendship we had thus far and the many more great years of growing what that started with love despite differences. Youths were gathered to splash their creativity on the billboard and bins at the launch of Blessings In A Bag new Drop-off point on Sunday, October 4 at SCAPE Youth Park. Alongside with the launch of the new collection point, Blessings In A Bag team held a donation drive for the Manila flood survivors. Members of the public came and gave donations-in-kind generously.

Blessings In A Bag is a non-profit organization that seeks to partner with existing communities, orphanages, schools, homes as well as initiatives to provide for the needs of underprivileged, abused and medically-ill children across Asia.

On a personal note, it was a fun-filled time for me to be part of the launch, painting for a good cause. I want to thank my extended family members for their generous contributions. It was amazing to have Stephen and my friends (Alex Pham and David Eng) who took their time-off on a Sunday to paint the billboard. It was great to see Emily Tan coming all the way down with her entire family to drop-off donation items. I’m happy that I’ve got friends who share a similar heart-beat and love for the community.

I also would like to thank Blessings In A Bag Team for giving us this opportunity to showcase our creativity and most importantly Emily Teng (Founder/Director of BIAB) for spear-heading this movement and being the agent of change: a blessing to those who have lost everything but their hope.

Achieving Dreams

I spent the afternoon watching YouTube videos and came across an inspirational speech by the late Dr Randy Pausch. Many great take away points.

Even though he was battling cancer, he did not choose to be an object of pity. While fighting his battle, he remained strong, even physically. He shared that we can still go after our childhood dreams. Highlighting he did not live out his childhood dream (being in football league), he shared a meaningful quote:

"Experience is what you get when you don't get what you wanted."

"When you do a bad job and no one points it out to you, it means they've given up on you. So when someone pushes you hard, it means they care for you."

"Brick walls are there for a reason: They let us prove how badly we want things"

We always pray for God's blessings and yet complain that we are not blessed. It is not that God has not bless us, it's just because we forget to pray specific prayers.

Specific requests = Specific answers.

Here an example:

Tom prayed: 'God bless me' - God ‘blessed’ Tom.

BUT

Tom told God that he is not blessed.

Reason: Tom does not know what God has already blessed him with.

So… this time…

Tom prayed to God for a car - Tom received a car.

BUT

Tom told God that he did not get this particular brand/model of the car.

Moral of the story: If you ASK SPECIFICALLY, you will RECEIVE SPECIFICALLY.

Let’s stop praying ‘God bless me’ prayers and at the same time not being choosy but ask anything according to God’s will and it will come to past.

God speaks, even through blogs

I got to know Willy Joe’s blog through my brother, Stephen. Soon after, I was introduced to The MEET UP gang and that’s how I got to know Willy personally.

I read many blogs but the content of this blog has kept me coming back for more. I believe in every season of our individual lives, God brings certain people to either mould our life or experience His blessings through their life. In my case, reading Willy’s blog has always been encouraging and uplifting.

One significant incident that happened not long ago was when I was having a ‘valley’ period in my friendship I chanced upon several posts on this blog that talked about friendship. To my amazement, my thoughts came aloud on the posts. It was the exact thoughts that I was reflecting about. I did not even share to Willy about what I was thinking about so that he could write something but I really believe that God has used this blog to speak to me.

Prior to this, I was actually praying for a breakthrough in my friendship. I posted a question on my own blog but that was the only post which was not commented and no one answered that question at all. That question I posted was the exact words this particular friend told me. As I reflect back, I understand why there was no one who left their comments there. It was God’s purpose after all.

My thoughts were already messed up and instead of hearing many different opinions, I was directed to read from Willy’s blog which really helped me to move on and take the right decisions to see a change in my friendship situation. I mean God can speak through anyone and anything, I love reading blogs and He used this very blog to keep me in the right direction.

As I write, I want to say that my friendship has been changed so much. After reading and being encouraged I began to pray. Not only that, I put my faith into action. The very friend who had disappointed me has surprised me so much. He has become more initiative and in spite of what had happened I know our friendship has moved on to the next level. Now, Instead of looking for THE BEST FRIEND, I want to be THE BEST FRIEND to my friend (s).

I want to thank Willy for faithfully updating your blog. Keep on writing for you will not how, when and who you may touch and change with every single thing you do.

Let no debt remain outstanding except for the debt of loving one another.

Prayer changes the person

I met Han Xiang on 3 July at Suntec Convention while serving at Corporate Prayer Meet. I will never forget him because I was the one who went and introduced myself to him as he looked quite lost when he reported for duty. He was also put in the same group as me and we served together. We hit it off almost instantaneously and soon after realised that he was actually the same age as me though he was from the Adults group.

During the prayer meet there was a segment where we are supposed to pray with anyone standing beside us for our needs and Han Xiang was beside me. Though I did not know him that well I did not care of what he is going think of me and mentioned my request to him that I want to have a deeper friendship in my life. I was very honest with my request, I knew what I was asking for and that was really my need at that very moment.

Prior to the prayer meet and the reason for such a prayer request was the many things that were happening in the friendship area of my life. I knew I needed a breakthrough. On the night of 21 June, I received the most unexpected msn message from my friend who told me that he thinks he can’t be my good friend and he added on that I had many other good friends around me. I was utterly disappointed. After explaining my view point, I gave him sometime to think through he had just said and told him I would get back to him for a conclusion on the matter so that we could move on with mutual understanding.

On 7 July, My friend msn me on his own and told me this: “Hey man, I have thought it over; we should build one another up”. I could not believe what I saw. So to reassure what I saw was for real, I asked him, “You are not saying to make me feel happy right?” He replied, not one bit. We shared with each other about what we think about the whole situation and come into consensuses and reminded each other with this: Let no debt remain outstanding, except for the debt to love one another.

On 30 July, we decided to hang out to catch up with each other. This outing was purely initiated by him and it was so refreshing during that outing. I had two tickets that I won for blogging about Old School so we decided to watch Days of our lives, a Korean documentary film which shows the Koreans’ passion about soccer and patriotism for their nation.

It did not just end there; I can see that he has been initiative than before, seeing his commitment to build a friendship is just so amazing. Now, it is more than just the ‘Hi and bye’, we talk more when we see each other. I can see that his perspective of friendship is changing. It may be just simple actions but it means a lot to me. I really appreciate it so much.

I’m thankful for the ‘valley’ (disappointments) experience in my friendship and now I’m able to appreciate my ‘mountain ’(successes) experiences better. Not forgetting to mention the most FABULOUS FRIEND: SLYVESTER FOO. Thank you so much for your friendship and love.

On 22 Aug 2009, I saw Han Xiang at the Combined Service and told him that the prayer he prayed was answered. Being very humble, Han Xiang asked me, “You also prayed for it, right?” I replied, yes, not knowing his reply would be: Then God must have answered your prayer! That is so modest of him, right?

I just want to say thank you Han Xiang for your prayer that day. Making specific prayer will help us see specific results. As Sly Foo says (emphasis added), “Prayer does not change things (only), prayer changes the person!

Which comes first Vision or Passion?

There is a definite answer for this question and the answer is Vision.

Why does Vision come first?

Alright, let’s say this person is passionate about dancing. But the next question is: “How did dance become his passion?” There will be plenty of answers to this question but despite the reasons, the individual will come to a point where he will have thoughts like this: “I want to be….”, “I want to…”, “If I become…”. These thoughts are mental images. You may call it “baby visions”. Visions are pictures of the future.

Before the person become passionate about dancing he already has ‘images’ of what he wants to be. The “what he wants to be” factor is being visionary. He runs after his vision and passion builds in. Without a Vision there is nothing one can be passionate about.

Vision is a picture (goal) and passion is the driving factor which helps the vision come to past. Somehow we tend not to associate the thoughts and images we have in our mind as visions and we mix it up with our passions.

It’s time to be passionate about your Vision and not the other way round. Once ‘sight’ of the goal is lost, passion is gone as well. So keep dreaming because dreams do come true.
